Merchant Focus (www.merchantfocus.com) was founded in 2002 and is headquartered out of Dublin, Ohio. They are a registered ISO/MSP of Deutsche Bank AG, New York. Their focus is in processing solutions for mobile, e-commerce, retail, and mail/phone merchant accounts. They are a registered member of the Electronic Transactions Association and offer both a tiered pricing structure and an interchange plus pricing structure with “no monthly fees” for any business processing over $250,000 annually.

The interchange plus pricing structure with “no monthly fees” is advertised on the front page of their website however there’s plenty of other businesses that will offer interchange plus with a lot less volume, or no prior processing history at all.

Merchant Focus is accredited with the Better Business Bureau since 2006 and has an A- rating with them. Over the past three years, they have had only five complaints filed against them, with one closed within the past twelve months. None of the customers whom filed complaints felt that the response they received was unsatisfactory. Merchant Focus does let you read one of the five complaints filed against them which cited a chargeback issue with their customer. The issue was resolved promptly. The other complaints cited billing/collection issues and problems with product/service. Five complaints is an extremely low number and it does come as a surprise that they have an A- rating instead of an A+.

There are tons of other merchant service providers out there that have significantly more complaints filed against them, some above 500, but manage to have an A+ rating. Usually it can be argued that anything lower than an A+ might as well be an F since there are so many other MSPs that have an A+ rating, however Merchant Focus should be an exception since they have so few complaints filed against them.

Before You Sign A Contract!

We recommend that all merchants speak with at least 2 processors before signing their contract. Why?…

First – You should feel comfortable with the sales representative, if you’re feeling pressure on the call or feel as though you are not a focus, it’s unlikely your experience will improve after signing your contract!

Second – Be wary of introductory rates (specifically qualified rates) in the initial pitch – each business is unique and the rates/fees that will actually save your business the most, are only available once the sales representative has learned about your business.

We currently have Cayan listed as our top ranked merchant service provider. However if they do not fit your needs, you can look through our full list of processors and find the one that is right for your business here.

Merchant Focus does seem to rely heavily on independent agents and resellers. This usually makes for a non-uniform sales experience and might lead to more complaints. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case with Merchant Focus. One of their most recent marketing campaigns is their mobile processing solution. They offer an attachment for an iPhone or iPad but do not offer solutions for Android or BlackBerry at this time. They also offer the swiper attachment free of charge which puts them in direct competition with SquareUp and GoPayment.

For e-commerce merchants, Merchant Focus offers a 2.19% qualified rate with a $0.24 transaction fee with a $10 monthly service fee, a $15 monthly minimum, and a $15 monthly gateway fee for Authorize.net usage. For retail merchants, they offer a 1.69% qualified rate with a $0.25 transaction fee with a $10 monthly service fee, and a $0 monthly minimum. For their mobile solution, they offer a 1.74% qualified rate with a $0.24 transaction fee with a $10 monthly service fee, and a $15 monthly gateway fee for Authorize.net usage
