Heartland Payment Systems is a major credit card processor with headquarters located in Princeton, New Jersey. Founded in 1997, the company processes over 120 billion credit card transactions every year, making it the fifth largest provider in the United States and the ninth largest worldwide. In addition to the company’s focus on providing credit and debit card processing for businesses of small and medium size, Heartland Payment Systems also handles e-commerce, check processing and payroll services.

Many people know of Heartland Payment Systems from the widely publicized 2008 computer hacking incident that resulted in more than 130 million credit card numbers being stolen from the company’s system. Although the incident challenged the company to recover losses and enhance its security, the company updated its system for the better and has consistently grown in the years since. Now, Heartland Payment Systems has a security system that many experts consider to be among the most progressive anywhere.

According to the Better Business Bureau, Heartland Payment Systems has an A+ rating. The company has had 24 complaints filed against it in the past three years, with eight in the past year, but all of these complaints have been closed. Eight complaints were based on billing or collection problems while 10 were related to product and service issues. One complaint dealt with guarantee or warranty problems, and five addressed issues with advertising or sales. With the competitive rates offered by Heartland Payment Systems and the volume of business it handles, the low number of complaints received by the Better Business Bureau about this company is impressive.

External sales representatives make up the bulk of this company’s marketing structure. Because Heartland Payment Systems performs background checks on all of its internal sales representatives, this may be the safest route for customers. The reliance of outside sales representatives on commissions means that customers should stay alert while shopping if they go this route. However, many of the outside representatives have also gotten excellent reviews, and the company never uses reseller organizations, independent contractors or sub-ISOs. Finally, merchants have access to a huge selection of tutorials, information and contacts that show the company’s dedication to its merchants.

Before You Sign A Contract!

We recommend that all merchants speak with at least 2 processors before signing their contract. Why?…

First – You should feel comfortable with the sales representative, if you’re feeling pressure on the call or feel as though you are not a focus, it’s unlikely your experience will improve after signing your contract!

Second – Be wary of introductory rates (specifically qualified rates) in the initial pitch – each business is unique and the rates/fees that will actually save your business the most, are only available once the sales representative has learned about your business.

We currently have Cayan listed as our top ranked merchant service provider. However if they do not fit your needs, you can look through our full list of processors and find the one that is right for your business here.

Dealing with the biggest credit card processors can be a hassle in some cases, but Heartland Payment Systems has taken steps to improve convenience for merchants. For example, the company has offices all over the United States, making customer service very accessible. Although some complaints have been leveled at the company, almost every case can be attributed to the agents who handled those accounts. Heartland Payment Systems understands that agents are important for merchant experiences, so it recommends that merchants work with agents they find trustworthy. All in all, the company has fewer complaints compared to many other payment processors.

Merchants who sign up with Heartland Payment Systems can choose a three-year contract. Although there is a $295 fee for cancellation, it is said to be negotiable. In addition, Heartland uses Interchange Plus, resulting in low markups for merchants over the fees that Visa, MasterCard and Discover charge Heartland and other payment processors. When dealing with Heartland Payment Systems, as with any other payment processor, merchants should spend time negotiating with agents to get the best deal. Unlike most other payment providers, Heartland Payment Systems passes on savings to its merchants even though the Durbin Amendment does not require them to do so with credit card payments.

Heartland Payment Systems is one of the biggest payment processors in the United States and the world, and it has some of the best reviews from merchants. The company received bad press in 2008 after it was hacked, but it emerged with better security and a strong education program for merchants. Some merchants may dislike the company’s three-year contract requirement, but Heartland Payment Systems remains a solid option for small and medium-sized businesses.
